Fishcakes were often the cheapest non-chip item in the Chinese takeaway Golden House in Penygraig when I was growing up, so fishcake and chips was a regular meal which cost about 50p in the early 80s, I found out years later that a fishcake is about 80% mashed potato. My first ever paid job was when I was 6 in 1981, a gang of us street urchins were paid by John in the street below ours (Penmaesglas St) to carry breeze blocks from the road in front of his house and through the back of his house for use in his extension project, he paid us all 50p each for helping, I spent mine on fishcake and chips at the Golden House.
